A soft territory is a geographic area that is associated with a driver. It is the driver's preferred area for jobs to be located, typically because it is close to the driver's depot.
In Scenarios, you can define a location that is at the center of a driver's soft territory. You can specify soft territories either manually or automatically. When you use Scenarios to place soft territories for drivers automatically, the locations at the center of soft territories are distributed throughout the job locations you have specified, weighting them toward regions of greatest job density. Drivers can have soft territories automatically created only if the drivers have shift patterns or if they are assigned to existing routes.
When assigning jobs to drivers, soft territories are used to weight jobs in a certain geographic area toward a particular driver, if a required driver is not specified. Jobs are assigned to drivers either by building routes or by assigning the jobs to routes. In the advanced Scenario settings, you can choose the strength of the weighting towards driver soft territories.
Note
This functionality is available only when using detached scenarios. In synchronized scenarios you can create soft territories automatically and then move the soft territory flags on the map by dragging them to the desired location.
To manually create a soft territory for a driver:
-
Open the list menu in the upper left corner of the List panel and select the Drivers option. The Drivers list opens.
-
Click a driver's name in the list or select the driver row and then click the Edit button on the List panel tool bar. The Driver dialog box opens.
-
Click the Soft Territory tab on the Driver dialog box.
-
Specify the location at the center of the driver's soft territory as either an existing marker, a latitude and longitude coordinate pair, or a street address.
-
Click Save. The dialog closes and the driver's soft territory location is saved. If the soft territory's center is not at an existing marker, a new marker is created at the location using the naming convention '[Driver Name]_centroid', for example 'John Smith_centroid' and can be seen in the markers list. The Circle icon to the left of the driver's name in the List panel is replaced with a Flag icon , indicating that the driver now has a soft territory.
To automatically create a driver soft territory:
-
Open the list menu in the upper left corner of the List panel and select the Drivers option. The Drivers list opens.
-
Select the check box beside each driver you want to assign a soft territory in the grid. Click the Create Soft Territories button in the Lists panel. Soft territories for the selected drivers are created.
The Circle icon to the left of the driver names in the List panel is replaced with a Flag icon , indicating that the drivers now have soft territories.
To see whether your drivers have a soft territory defined, open the list menu in the upper left corner of the List panel and select the Drivers option. Drivers with soft territories have a Flag icon instead of a Circle icon in the second column of the grid.
You can click the Show driver soft territories button on the map toolbar to see the location of the driver soft territories you configured. Soft territory centers are shown on the map as Flag icons .
-
Hover your mouse over a soft territory flag icon on the map to show the name of the driver assigned to the soft territory in the lower left corner of the map.
-
Click on a soft territory flag icon to display a pop-up in the upper right corner of the map. This pop-up displays the driver’s name, the latitude and longitude coordinates of the soft territory center, and a delete button. Use this button to delete the soft territory.
If you have the Show Routes button selected in the toolbar, all driver soft territory flags on the map are displayed in gray. If you unselect Show Routes, the driver soft territory flags on the map are displayed in different colors. For the colors to show up you must have the Driver option selected in the List panel. The colors of the flag icon in the pop-up box and of the flag icon in the driver list match the color of the flag icon on the map. Each driver has a different color.
You can move the position of a soft territory center by dragging the flag icon on the map to the desired location. This adjusts the latitude and longitude coordinates of the soft territory center.
To delete a soft territory:
-
Right-click on the soft territory flag icon.
-
Select Remove Soft Territory.
Alternatively, click on a soft territory flag icon to display a pop-up in the upper right corner of the map. Then, click the Delete button in this pop-up.
