Use the following procedure to automatically create zones for your scenario. To do this, you must have jobs or recurring jobs in your scenario. You can divide these jobs into zones either based on the number of zones you define or based on a metric and target number for each zone. We recommend creating zones automatically if you have more than 100 jobs. For a smaller number of jobs, we recommend creating zones manually.
To add several zones at once as an import file, see Importing and Exporting Zones. If you have already created zones and you want to edit their details, see Editing Zones. Automatically and manually created zones can be edited in the same way.
If you have existing zones and you create zones automatically, your existing zones are deleted and replaced with the new zones.
You can use the following methods for dividing your jobs into zones:
-
Set number of zones: Define the number of zones to generate. Your jobs are divided evenly into the specified number of zones. Use this method if you want to be sure to create a certain number of zones; for example, one zone per driver.
-
Set a target for each zone: Define a metric and the target number for dividing jobs into zones. Each zone will contain the appropriate number of jobs to meet the target metric. Use this method if it is important to you that each zone meets a certain minimum target metric; for example, each zone contains jobs with a combined, minimum time on site. The system will determine how many zones to create.
-
Open the list menu in the upper left corner of the List panel and select the Zones option. The Zones list opens.
-
Click Create Zones. In the pop-up box click Start next to Set number of zones.
-
Define the following:
Number of zones: Enter the number of zones you want to create. This number of zones will be created, as long as you have enough jobs.
Divide jobs by: Select the metric to use for dividing jobs into zones so that the jobs are evenly distributed across the zones. “Job count” considers purely the number of jobs, “Unique job locations” considers only those jobs that are at a different location, and “Time on site” considers the combined time that a driver spends on site when servicing the jobs. You can define your own metrics. If you are using a detached scenario, add the metric on the Load tab of the Job dialog box. If you are using a synced scenario, see Defining New Capacity Metrics.
Variance (%): Enter the maximum expected difference (as a percentage) between the jobs, job locations, time on site, or other metric in each zone. A lower variance ensures that the jobs are more equally distributed than a larger variance. However, a higher variance can produce better results if you create zones across both urban and rural areas or if there are varying distances between the job locations.
