Verizon Connect’s speed limit data is world-class, covering 99.4% of all freeways, major, and secondary roads in the USA; and over 20 million kilometers globally. We use this data to trigger speed-related notifications in all Verizon Connect products, such as ‘Speeding Against Speed Limit’ InSight Alerts or in-cab speed alerts in the Navigation GE mobile app.
The accuracy of this data is a top priority for us, as we know that you rely on accurate speed limit data to ensure that your drivers are carrying out their work in a safe and responsible manner.
However, up-to-date speed limit data is a tricky beast: roads change and speed limits are updated for millions of roads around the world every week. If our data is out of date, it is possible for vehicles traveling below a street's posted speed limit to be incorrectly reported as speeding, or for vehicles traveling above a street's posted speed limit to remain unreported.
It's important that you understand where speed limit data comes from, and the tools that are available to you to take control of your map data and edit speed limits on roads and freeways.
Speed limits in the Verizon Connect platform are primarily determined using Posted Speed Data. This is speed data collected using cameras and software on vehicles that drive millions of miles along the country's roads and freeways. This information is embedded directly into the map data supplied to Verizon Connect by our mapping partners.
We spend a lot of time ensuring that this data is correct, but because it's based on a ‘snapshot’ gathered at a single point in time, it can eventually become out of date or otherwise inaccurate. Speed limits or vehicle restrictions change over time, new roads can be built, and roads closed permanently or temporarily to accommodate repair work, street events, or new road layouts.
For this reason, we’ve built a tool so you can make small edits yourself rather than waiting for us to incorporate fixes into the global map data. You can manually add or change speed limits, specify the direction of travel permitted along a stretch of road, or even specify the maximum size or type of vehicle allowed to travel along on a road.
The Road Editor is a simple tool that you can use to edit your own map data, and very helpful if you want to make quick edits directly to your map data as these edits override the base map data. This means that you can quickly override the posted speed limit data on any street with your own custom speed limit.
When this tool is used, the alerting and navigation systems in the Verizon Connect platform default to your new customer-edited data. These edits apply to all users and drivers within your account, but not to drivers or users from other companies.
With the Road Editor tool you can also choose to change the following status details of road segments:
-
Speed Limit: The speed limit in MPH or KPH, depending on the default speed unit of your base map data. This can be edited for both directions of travel along the road if permitted by the road type, or for only one direction.
-
Road Status: Either ‘Road Open’ or ‘Road Closed’.
-
Height Limit: The maximum height of vehicles that are allowed on this street or street segment in feet or meters.
-
Weight Limit: The maximum weight of vehicles that are allowed on this street or street segment in pounds or kilograms.
-
Width Limit: The maximum width of vehicles that are allowed on this street or street segment in feet or meters.
-
Length Limit: The maximum length of vehicles that are allowed on this street or street segment in feet or meters.
-
Truck Behavior: Whether trucks are 'Allowed', 'Prohibited', or ‘Preferred’ on this street or street segment.
Using the Road Edits tool found on the Map tab, you can zoom into a geographic location, and then select a street link or a sequence of street links to view the configured speed limit for those links, among other attributes.
You can then quickly and easily make edits that apply to all of your users and drivers.
Do your part in our community and support your own team by keeping the map up to date.
Changes made using the Road Editor tool are stored in a separate cloud database uniquely and securely associated with your customer account.
If many different customers make the exact same edit, then we will actively incorporate their custom edits into the base map data, resulting in better quality maps for everyone. If this consolidation affects your Road Edits, you will receive a notification that some or all of your edits have been removed automatically.
You can also review all of the edits made to your street data on the platform map UI, and filter these edits by date range, by account, and by attribute edited (Speed Limit, Road Status, Height Limit, Weight Limit, Width Limit, Length Limit, or Any).
